The approved construction cost, with contingencies, is $14.6 million.

Capital Campaign

On August 15, 2023, City Council approved the proposed Urho Saari Swim Stadium Capital Campaign, initiating a fundraising effort to provide a variety of opportunities for businesses to donate towards the renovation of The Plunge. 

Staff are working closely with community leaders to seek donors who wish to become a part of this exciting project that will serve the community for years to come.

City Council adopted plans and specifications for the project in November 2023. 

City Council awarded the construction contract to Morillo Construction in March 2024.

The project is in the construction phase.

The Plunge Groundbreaking

On August 20, 2024, City Council, donors, dignitaries, stakeholders, and community members all gathered to break ground on the long-awaited renovation of the beloved Uhro Saari Swim Stadium, also known as "The Plunge." Watch the full groundbreaking ceremony here.

The Urho Saari Swim Stadium "The Plunge" is named after a highly regarded swim coach who came to El Segundo in 1941 and coached U.S. Olympic water polo and swim teams.  Originally built in 1940 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the larger pool has eight lanes and is 25 yards long.  There is also a separate junior pool. 

The Urho Saari Swim Stadium was designated a local Cultural Resource by the City of El Segundo in 1994. The building was designated for its association with Urho Saari, and as an embodiment of the distinctive characteristics of PWA Moderne architecture.
